Come Pitch to Goldthread

Goldthread covers Chinese food, culture, and travel for a new generation. Our target audience comprises globally-curious millennials and Gen Z-ers who want to learn more about what China is like today and how it got here.

Our aim is to provide people with information they can share at their next dinner party—whether it’s an explainer on the latest Chinese internet phenomena or the answer to burning questions such as why Chinese people love hot water.

We’re interested in stories that inspire and inform. The best pieces reveal something new about China—past and present—while telling a compelling human story.

💬 Before You Pitch

Please read the stories and watch the videos on our site to get a sense of the topics we cover and our writing style. We are particularly interested in stories that broaden people’s understanding of China beyond the big headlines and typical assumptions of the place.

We typically do not cover spot news stories, but we welcome news trend features if they can be developed into deeper pieces. Our freelancers often pitch us feature stories that tend to be evergreen and explain an ongoing phenomenon or concept.

👍 Do

Keep your pitches short and sharp. We recommend you pitch your story title, followed by your lede and background information. Please also include a brief checklist of what elements you plan to include in your story, such as location(s) you plan to visit and people you plan to interview.

Tell us a little about you. Even if your pitch doesn’t exactly suit us, we might be able to come up with an alternative idea based on your experiences or location—and brainstorm next steps together.

⛔ Do not

Pitch us stories you have already produced elsewhere for another publication or your personal blog.

Pitch stories that are based solely on folk wisdom or hearsay without being able to substantiate them with research.

💰 Housekeeping

Yes, we pay. Our commissioning editor will tell you our rates for the story, and it may vary based on detail and length.
